The hijacking of creativity?

After a frantic couple of days, drumming up work and trying to get a project running before everybody gives up for the Christmas holidays, I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that businesses no longer want writers with the freedom to describe their wares in an effective (or even attractive) way. They are simply looking for an “indexer”, who will get them further up a Google search.

What a pity is is that, when we are asked to write a piece of web content, the most important aspect of the specification is that is should be SEO orientated and must contain buzz words, spread throughout it ‘naturally’. How on earth does that happen?

I only wish the businesses themselves could see words as we do. The problem then is, of course, that they wouldn’t need us!

C’est la vie!

16 December 2011

The first snow of the year fell today, which was just as well, because I’m working from home and did not have to venture out in it!

Today I am going to put my endeavours into finding some more work, so I shall be completing an advertisement I intend to put up in my local libraries, writing up a circular for posting to businesses and searching online for some freelance writing work.

This means, of course that I will not be populating this blog all day, but I may well re-visit tonight, reporting on whether or not I’ve had any success.

Wish me luck.

14 December 2011

So, this is my first blog – and that’s official.

This evening, I’ve been to a reception at a college where I lecture.  They were holding a Christmas function, so that the various lecturers (or Consultants, as they call us), who don’t often get to meet each other, could get together and compare stories of students, subjects and work we’re doing “outside”.  Most of the lecturers have a 2nd form of income and some even hold down a full time role, just lecturing on an evening or so each week.

Those of you who get to become writers may find that other work supplements your writing, at lease for some of the time.  I must say, however, that even if I was earning a huge amount from my writing, I would still teach.  I find it extremely rewarding and it gives me lots of material to bring into my writing.

I’m still debating whether or not to invite open contributions to my blog.  This is my first one ever and I think it makes sense (since I’m actually trying to help aspiring writers) to let readers talk to each other throught the site.  Given that this is my first blog, however, I don’t expect anybody to see it, since I haven’t even begun the process of getting it “out there”.  I also have the added probelm, of course, of having come to blogging quite late and have to compete instant messaging systems.  I’m hoping, however, that those of you who read this are not the slightest bit interested in what I had for lunch, or what colour gloves I decided to wear to walk the dog this afternoon – all in 140 characters!

Ok, that’s it.  Time I hit the sack.  I have a deadline to meet tomorrow, but I will work on putting together a useful contributor’s tool.
